Glossary

If you use a number of technical terms on your website, or use acronyms to refer to processes and organisations, it is a good idea to include a glossary.

By following these simple steps you can ensure that a visitor to your website leaves fully understanding the information they have received, increasing the chances of a return visit.

  1. When viewing the site in edit mode you will need to select Create New Page - 'Create New Page'.
  2. This will bring up the template gallery - from here we select 'Content' and then 'Glossary'. You can then introduce your glossary using the text editor.Text Editor
  3. We then need to add items to the Glossary.
    1. Select Edit Glossary.
    2. Click on 'New Item'.
    3. Enter the appropriate information, only the Term and Description are mandatory.
      Term Enter the glossary term in this field. The term and definitions will be shown in the alphanumeric order of the terms.
      Acronym If the term can be shortened or abbreviated, enter the shortened term here. It will be displayed in brackets next to the term.
      Alternative terms

      If the term has other words by which it is known, enter them in this field, semicolon separated. It will direct the user to the correct entry, as below:

      Description Enter the definition or description of the term in this field.
      Further Details The Further Details field is for entering a link to a page or resource. Links to external pages must be typed directly into the field. Internal links can be entered by clicking on the 'Internal Links' button.
      Open Further Details Link In New Window? Select whether this link should open in a new window.
    4. Click on 'Save this Row' to save the entry. You can now add more entries, or exit and save the terms entered so far.
    5. Click on 'OK'.
  4. Once you are happy with your Glossary select Save Page.
  5. You will be asked to add a 'Name' and a 'Display Name' to the page, once you are happy select 'OK'.

  6. If you are an author on the site your page will be submitted for approval. If you are an editor you will need to approve the page to go onto the live site. This can be achieved by selecting Approve Page.
