What is a Web Forum

A web forum, also known as a discussion forum, bulletin board or message board, is a communication tool that allows an individual to post a comment or question online. Other individuals, who are members of the same discussion board, may read that comment, or question, and respond with their own remark over time.

Web Forum Terminology

If an individual posts a question, and three other people post answers (reply) to that question, these four "posts" comprise what is known as a "thread" of conversation. The phrase, "threaded discussion board / forum" is common, referring to threads of conversation, each focussed on a particular topic e.g. "How do I fix my PC?".

Below is a sample question posted, created using the discussion forum template:

Below shows how a reply can be left to the posted question:

And below is how the reply to the question appears on the Web Forum:

Creating the Forum

To create a forum, you need to click the ‘Create New Page’ on the toolbar. Select the ‘Forums’ template and then select ‘Discussion Forum’

Page Body Content

In this section you can enter an introduction to the forum, or set rules for your forum; you can also enter in statistical data, images or media if you wish.

Discussion Forum Settings

If you want a specific Forum moderator group (i.e. someone who can edit and delete posts from the forum), please send an email to help@cubik.co.uk and we will create a group for you. Otherwise, we advise that you select Admin in the Moderated By option, to ensure that you are able to remove any inappropriate posts.

You can also select whether you want anonymous browsers on the forum i.e. visitors to the website who haven't got an account or have an account but are not signed in - these visitors are classed as 'anonymous'. To prevent anonymous access to the forum, leave the check box un-checked:

When you have finished, click the Save button on your editor toolbar, give the forum page a name, click 'Ok' and your forum will now be setup.
