Channel Summary

A 'Channel Summary' provides an introduction to a channel and automatically creates a links list for all pages within it.

  1. When viewing the site in edit mode, select Create New Page - 'Create New Page'.
  2. The template gallery will open - select 'Navigation' and then 'Channel Summary'. The text editor will appear. Add any general content required to appear above the list of Channels and Pages in the Page Body Content Placeholder.Text Editor

Saving the page at this point will create a 'Channel Summary' that displays an introduction and links to all pages or channels within the parent channel. However, it is possible to reconfigure the 'Channel Summary' by editing the 'Summary Definition'.

Summary Definition

To configure the 'Channel Summary' it is possible to change the information in this placeholder.

  1. Select Configure Channel Summary
  2. This will open the following screen. A full explanation of each variable can be found in the table below.Summary Config

    Optional Title The Optional Title is an title that is displayed above the summary. If the Channel Summary is split over more than one page, then the Optional Title is shown on each page.
    Link optional title to target channel Select if you want the optional title to link to the target channel
    Include Child Channels Select this option to summarise child channels. These are sub-channels from the main channel selected, and any sub-channels of those channels.
    Importance

    Channel Properties and Page Properties allow a page and a channel to be set as Is Important. The Important field enables you to opt for only summarising channels and pages that have been marked as important, or show these first.

    Show Meta Data

    Select this option to display Meta Data for the Summarised items.

    Note:
    Only select this option if you know that your Channels and pages contain MetaData.

    New Item Highlighting This field controls whether new or changed channels and pages are highlighted in the summary. You can also opt to display new or changed items first. An item is new when the item was created after the current visitor last logged on. If your website is public-facing only and you do not have any registered users, then this option will have no effect.
    Parent Channel If you have opted to Include Child Channels, then you can use this field to display the parent channels. The display options include displaying the parent channel's name or grouping the child items according to their parent channel.
    Show Date There are various dates associated with each page, such as the date the page was last modified. From this field you can choose to display one of these dates on the summary page, or no dates. The date is displayed in the format defined by Date Format.
    Sorting

    The summarised items can be sorted into alphabetical order, or by dates of publication.

    Note:
    If you have chosen to group the items by Channel (Parent Channel field), then the sort order will be within each grouping.

    Optional Target Channel Link Text If the Channel Summary is set up to link to the parent channels of the pages it is showing, this text will be included in the link. Leave blank for the default.
    A to Z mode Some sites require their navigation to be structured in an A to Z format. This can be achieved on a 'Channel Summary' by checking this box.
    Exclude child channels with SummaryExclusionKey property set to If you add a custom property called SummaryExclusionKey to a channel, and enter a value here, matching channels will not be included in the summary.
    List Type This field controls whether the summary will just display lists of channels, channels and pages within the channels, or pages only.
    Channel Use this field to select a source channel for the summary. The summary will only display items that are in the selected channel, or are 'children' of the selected channel.
    Show Icon If you select this option, the summary page will show each page icon next to the page's display name in the summary.
    Show Description If you select this option, the summary page will show each page description below the page's display name on the summary.
    Max Links This controls the maximum number of items that will be shown in the summary. If you leave it blank, then all items fitting the criteria will be shown.
    Show Hidden Items

    Channel Properties and Page Properties can be used to cause an item to Hide when Published. This means that they will not be visible to visitors. If you select the Show Hidden Items option, then these hidden items will be listed in the summary. Visitors will be able to open the hidden items by clicking on the link.

    Note:
    Hidden items are always shown when editing the site.

    Link per Page Sets a restriction on the number of links that are shown on each page of the summary. If there are more links found, then several pages will be created for visitors to browse though.
    Date Format This controls the format of the dates shown next to each page listed in the summary. You can control whether a date is displayed from the Show Date field.
    Link to Target Channel If this option is selected, then a link to the channel you are summarising is displayed. This will appear below the summary list.
    Display RSS Link Select this option to display an RSS link at the top of the Summary page.
    Allow posting download as PDF Select this option if you wish to enable users to download the 'Channel Summary' as a PDF.
